Thurston Moore, “Benediction”
Story Time
A friend from college once worked at a fancy lingerie store in Manhattan. She told some of my friends that sometimes Thurston Moore would come into the place with young twenty-something girls and not only buy them things, but go into the dressing rooms with them when they went to try them on.
My fellow Sonic Youth-worshipping friends and I did our best to ignore this anecdote, or attempt to rationalize it in a way that would reconcile it with our previously harmonious conception of Sonic Youth’s (and particularly Thurston and Kim Gordon’s) inter-band dynamic.
When the news broke a little earlier in this year that Thurston and Kim were splitsville, I immediately thought back to this anecdote and its veracity and what role it might have played in the proceedings.
I reminisced about that moment with one of the afore-said Sonic Youth-worshipping friends this evening and am still somewhat surprised by the separation, even though I shouldn’t be. Everyone in the band seemed to be having such carefree fun only a year ago.
